New research out of Germany, reveals that white tea apparently has potential anti-obesity effects.
White tea is manufactured from the new buds and first leaves of the same plant used to make the black and green teas popular in Western countries. But since white tea is less processed than its “cousins,” it’s believed to have more of the antioxidants and other healthy ingredients than the other varieties.
But can white tea deliver on these suggested benefits as it says it can?
The study noted that white tea was responsible for many effects that decreased fat cell growth. According to their study, the plant’s weight-loss mechanism appears to be related to an extract in white tea that can help your body break fat down so it can better process and eliminate the unnecessary fat.
When the researchers treated human cells called “pre-adipocytes”—fat cell wannabees—with white-tea extract, they discovered that the new fat cells were essentially smaller in size and were possibly being kept from increasing in number. In addition, a component of the white tea apparently even caused a drop in the body’s expression of a gene linked with proliferation and/or growth of new adipocytes (fat cells), which in turn caused existing fat cells to dissolve the fat they were harboring.
White tea may hold promise in terms of weight loss, although more studies are needed to be sure of this. It’s vital, however, to keep in mind that a healthy, balanced diet and regular physical activity are the keys to a solid weight-loss regimen, rather than looking for that one, lone ingredient or magic bullet that will guarantee weight loss and health.
