Heavyweight Championship
Champion Brock Lesnar vs: Interm Champion Frank Mir
Brock Lesnar is definitely a freak
of a human being when you take a look at him. He lost his UFC debut to Frank Mir by kneebar but was working his ground and pound well until he got submitted. I think Brock Lesnar is still a little green to be the champion, he lost his UFC debut to Mir, then he won a 3 round decision against Heath Herring, and finally in his third fight he faced then UFC Heavyweight Champ Randy Couture and beat him with a TKO in the second round so he hasn’t had a whole lot of experience. Frank Mir has been competing in MMA for 8 years and has had many tough opponents including Pete Williams, Tank Abbott, Wes Sims, Tim Sylvia, Brock Lesnar, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and all of these fights where victories for Mir. Frank Mir is excellent when it comes to grappling and Ju Jitsu but in his last fight with Nogueira when he won the Intern Heavyweight belt his striking was much improved as he won by TKO in the second round. Wrestlers are sometimes susceptible to submissions and Frank Mir has plenty of those to throw at Brock Lesnar. I think both fighters have greatly improved in the 18 months since Mir beat Brock the first time but I think the results will be the same.
Keith’s Pick: Frank Mir by arm bar in Round 2
Just when I think Brock is in over his head he proves me wrong with a strong performance. Brock Lesnar has solid wrestling skills along with always improving jiu-jitsu and striking. Brock dropped Randy Couture and Heath Herring with straight punches. In the first fight Mir was able to catch Brock with a funky leg lock in 1:30 of the first round. It’s extremely difficult to submit a guy that fast two fights in a row. I believe Brock will pressure Mir with fast takedowns and stiff ground and pound. My brain says Brock but my heart says Frank Mir.
Josh’s Pick: LESNAR DEC
Welterweight Championship
George “Rush” St. Pierre vs. Thiago “Pitbull” Alves
GSP is the prototype of new MMA fighters, he is good at absolutely everything including takedowns, takedown defense, striking, wrestling, and submissions. GSP has not had once easy fight in the UFC including bouts against Matt Hughes 3 times, BJ Penn twice, Matt Serra Twice, Jason Mayhem Miller, Frank Trigg, Sean Sherk, Jon Fitch, and Josh Koscheck. Thiago Alves has been on a tear winning his last 7 fights in a row including the destruction of Matt Hughes at UFC 85. Alves trains at American Top Team so he has a good camp preparing him for the fight against GSP. Thiago Alves is great with his Muay Thai striking, Ju Jitsu, wrestling, and take down defense. The Pitbull is arguably the biggest Welterweight in the division and I think he will stuff GSP’s takedowns and keep it standing which is where he can win the fight.
Keith’s Pick: Thiago Alves TKO Round 2
In my opinion this fight should be the main event. We all know how great GSP is but I think that Thiago is going to make himself in this fight. GSP is great at everything and I believe he is going to go down as one of the best ever. With that being said I think Thiago is going to KO GSP. GSP can win with lay and pray but not with submission or ground and pound. Getting Alves down to the ground is going to be dangerous. His fights with Hughes and Koscheck showed his sick takedown defense. I like both guys but
Josh’s Pick: ALVES KO RD 3
Jon Fitch vs. Paulo Thiago
Jon Fitch is a good striker with great wrestling skills. His loan loss in the UFC was against George St Pierre for the Welterweight title. Paulo Thiago came out of nowhere in his UFC debut to win Knockout of the Night honors at UFC 95 when he KO’d Fitch’s American Kickboxing Academy teammate Josh Koscheck. I see Jon Fitch not messing around after what happened to Koscheck so he will take Thiago down and ground n pound him.
Keith’s Pick: Jon Fitch by Rear Naked Choke Round 2
John Fich has a complete game and has fought the very best at welterweight. Thiago is coming off an upset with a win over Josh Koscheck. Striking is close, wrestling is def Fitch, and Jiu-jitsu would go to Thiago.
Josh’s Pick: FITCH DEC
Dan Henderson vs. Michael “The Count” Bisping
Dan Henderson has excellent striking and a huge right hand that can stop anybody if it lands. Henderson is an Olympic wrestler that likes to stand and bang so this will be an exciting fight. Michael Bisping is a good striker that definitely wants to keep the fight standing. Bispings only two questionable fights were a loss to Rashad Evans and a split decision win against Matt Hamill and both of these fighters are wrestlers. Dan Henderson is the most accomplished wrestler in the UFC so if he wants to take this fight down I do not think Bisping can stop him.
Keith’s Pick: Dan Henderson by Decision
This fight follows in the tradition of the smash TV hit The Ultimate Fighter, as the two coaches will square up against each other. This fight is just another day at the office for Hendo as he has been in so many big fights its ridiculous. Bisping is working on following in the footsteps of Griffin and become the second guy to win the show, coach it, and then win the title. First, he has to throw Hendo a real beaten. Can Bisping stop the tackle? Will Hendo try to KO Bisping on the feet?
Josh’s Pick: HENDO DEC
Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Alan Belcher
All ready a huge star in Japan Akiyama is making his UFC debut as the #9 ranked Middleweight in the world. He is a Judo fighter that has KO power just asked Denis Kang since he was knocked out by Akiyama at Hero’s 2007 in Korea. Alan Belcher is a great striker with good submission skills. Belcher is coming off of arguably the biggest win of his career when he submitted Denis Kang at UFC 93. This could be a great fight as long as Akiyama doesn’t have any UFC octagon gitters in his U.S. debut.
Keith’s Pick: Yoshihiro Akiyama by (T)KO in Round 1
Akiyama is the next big thing coming out of Japan. He is a lifelong Judoka and has competed in MMA against some of the best in the world. Belcher has elite kickboxing along with great conditioning. Can Alan stop the Judo trip?
Josh’s Pick: BELCHER TKO RD 2
Mark Coleman vs. Stephan Bonnar
Mark Coleman is a 44 yr old wrestler that does not have very good striking but can take a punch. He coined the name ground n pound and that is about all he is good at. Coleman looked horrible in his UFC debut against and equally bad Mauricio “Shogun” Rua as both men where visibly exhausted after the first round. Stephan Bonnar is a purple belt under the late Carlson Gracie and a former Chicago Golden Gloves boxer that is also good at Muay Thai. Stephan “The American Psycho” Bonnar is a true warrior at heart, he can give anyone in the division a great fight and I think Mark Coleman is to old and has not evolved enough to beat Bonnar.
Keith’s Pick: Stephan Bonnar by (T)KO Round 1
I was talking to Stephan on the phone when he told me he was fighting Mark Coleman and all I could do is LOL! Don’t get me wrong; Mark Coleman is a UFC HOF and one bad mutha that I have a tremendous amount of respect for. I wish they would of made Coleman vs Liddell for this event. Coleman is relentless with takedowns and has a decent chin. Bonnar has solid striking and ground skills and I know he has been working real hard on the wrestling. If Bonnar moves a lot he is going to have target practice with Coleman’s head. I can’t see Coleman holding Bonnar down for three rounds.
Josh’s Pick: BONNAR DECISION
