Steroids and Sex-Changes

Jul 22, 2009

You may have heard the recent news about Cher’s daughter undergoing hormonal therapy and sex-change procedures to become a man. Now, this is her perrogative and it’s not my place to judge, but this raised another question to my mind. prohormones

Why is it legal for someone to take hormones to change their sex, but it isn’t legal for a person to take hormones to enhance their sex? By this I mean men (and women) wanting to use steroids as a means of gaining muscle mass. By our current laws, it’s ok for a woman to use hormones to become a man (and vice versa), but it’s not ok for a man to use hormones to become more of a man? It sounds like a double standard to me.

First off, I am not condoning the use of any illegal substances. I am merely raising a question and an opinion. What if the testosterone therapy was done under the supervision of a doctor (as is the case for sex-changes)? Many people already use doctor-supervised testosterone therapy to combat naturally declining hormone levels. Why not make this practice available to the general public if someone just wants to improve themselves? It’s just a thought.

I don’t think that this is going to be an issue that is resolved any time soon. So in the meantime, I guess the rest of us who want to enhance our physiques through legal means will have to rely on prohormones and other over-the-counter muscle gaining products.

Great point. I never thought about issues like that so in depth. I totally agree, what a double standard.
