Is Fruit Bad on a Bodybuilding Diet?

Jul 27, 2009

fruitOver the course of my competetive bodybuilding career, I have followed a variety of diets. The main source of fiber in these diets came from vegetables. More specifically, green vegetables such as broccoli, green beans or spinach leaves.

After eating relatively the same foods day in and day out, one tends to get a little bored with the meal plan. As an experiment on myself, I switched over from vegetables to fruit to see if that would hinder my fat loss progress.

I have spoken with many bodybuilders who feel that fruit is a no-no when it comes to pre-contest preparation. They seemed to be under the impression that the sugar content in the fruit would ruin their physique. Personally, I achieved my best ever condition with the diet which incorporated fruit. So this raises the question; Is fruit bad on a bodybuilding diet?

Granted, fruit does contain sugar, but it is not the same as eating regular table sugar or a candy bar. Besides, have you ever heard of anyone getting fat because they eat too many apples? Fruit is nature’s candy, and for me, it was like cheating without cheating during my diet. Besides that, you are also getting the added benefits of the fiber in the fruit. Some of the best choices are: apples, kiwi, strawberries, peaches, grapefruit and oranges.

For me, fruit was perfectly fine to have on my contest preparation plan. You may be one of those people who is still skeptical to use fruit on your contest plan, but give it a try. You may find it to be a useful tool to help you through those tough dieting days.
