How Meds Can Affect You Workouts
Jul 28, 2009
Beware of popping certain pills if you’re headed to the gym. Some over-the-counter and prescription medications can make exercise dangerous. What to watch out for:
- Cold medications, diet pills, allergy remedies and some herbal weight loss teas. Many of these contain compounds that can increase your pulse, which can lead to a dangerously high heart rate.
- Antiobiotics (Fuluroquinolones). These are usually prescribed for upper-respiratory, intestinal and urinary tract infections. They may cause tendon inflammation and an increased risk of serious tendon injuries.
- Antihistamines. They can cause drowsiness and decrease your reaction time, balance and coordination.
Be aware of any and all of the medication you might be taking prior to exercising. If you have any concerns with some of the over-the-counter or prescribed medication you might be on, contact your doctor with questions.
