Garlic: The good and the ugly
Dec 15, 2008
Garlic has medicinal properties, and many health benefits. Garlic contains two main ingredients that give health benefits called allicin and diallyl sulphides. Garlic is known to prevent the flu and common cold, used as acne treatment, used to manage high- cholesterol levels, used as a natural mosquito repellent, and a natural antibiotic.
Garlic is a very powerful antioxidant. Aged garlic has the most antioxidants to benefit your health. Antioxidants protect the human body from damaging “free radicals.”
The stronger the taste the better garlic is for you. Garlic contains more sulfur when having a stronger taste. Organic garlic is well known for its great taste, and high sulfur content. When it comes to buying garlic, it is always best to buy organic.
There can be some negative effects from garlic. One most common is bad breath. The way around bad breath is to take garlic in supplement form. Some more possible serious side effects include allergic reactions, or damage to the digestive tract. Raw garlic has been reported to cause more serious digestive issues. Garlic can cause harmful side effects when mixed with certain drugs, so always consult with your doctor before taking garlic.

I just got back from spending 6 months living in Latin America and the benefits of garlic are WELL-KNOWN there. I lived with a family in Nicaragua, and they swore by garlic as a cure-all for many types of ailments. I felt nauseated one day and my house mother came running with a peeled clove of garlic for me to eat. When I came down with a slight cold, she crushed an extra clove of garlic into my bean soup each night. When her pregnant niece had any type of discomfort, she force-fed her clove after clove! She explained to me that this was a cure that was very well known by most Latin Americans and had been taught to her by her mother. Now that I have returned to the US, I have decided to make garlic part of my daily vitamin regimen. Luckily, there are odor-free pills so my health benefits without my social life suffering…

I love garlic and I eat it in everything. Coming from an old school italian family, we have always cooked with garlic. The fact that it is also good for me is just an added bonus to how delicious it is.

Intresting article…if eating it in food or raw, will it affect your smell, or leave an odor? I don’t want to stink around people

In response to your question “if digested, will it cause you to stink?” I have a short and simple response.
When eaten in quantity, garlic may be strongly evident in your sweat and breath the following day. This is because garlic’s strong smelling sulfur compounds are metabolized forming allyl methyl sulfide. Allyl methyl sulfide (AMS) cannot be digested and is passed into your blood. It is carried to the lungs and the skin where it is excreted. Since digestion takes several hours, and release of AMS several hours more, the effect of eating garlic may be present for a long time.
Hope that answers your question!
