Jake Shields a free agent?

Mar 25, 2010

Jake Shields

Jake Shields a free agent?

Jake Shields is fighting the last fight on his Strikeforce contract against well-known UFC defect Dan Henderson April 17th airing on CBS.  Shields is defending the Strikeforce Middleweight title against Dan Henderson in Henderson’s publicized Strikeforce Debut.  It is quite a surprise that Strikeforce is letting their champion, Shields, defend the belt with zero fights left on his contract with the UFC is interested in him when his contract is up. I really hope this turns out to be an awesome duel between these two. I think Shields has awesome potential as a fighter, and beating Henderson could be just what he needs going into talks with UFC.  Could we see the Strikeforce Middleweight belt on UFC television? Shields needs to get by Henderson first and then I believe that anything is possible!

Miguel Torres loses at WEC 47

Miguel Torres Cut

Multi Vitamins and Minerals would help Miguel Torres cut heal

Miguel Torres dropped his second fight in a row at WEC 47 in Columbus Ohio to Urijah Faber protege Joseph Benavidez when he got Guillotine Choked after receiving a horrible cut on his forehead .  Torres lost the 135lb belt to Brian Bowles at WEC 42 and he was looking for a victory against Benevidez to get back to the title.  The winner of Torres and Benevidez is to be considered the number one contender so Benevidez will get a shot a Dominick Cruz since he beat Brain Bowles at WEC 47.

There have been many questions about Miguel Torres since he has dropped his second  fight in a row.  Before this 2 fight losing streak Torres had won 17 in a row and only lost 1 fight in his first 38.  Torres was considered by many to be the number one pound for pound fighter in the world ahead of Anderson Silva and Fedor Emelianenko.  Only time will tell what happens to the legend of Miguel Torres and I hope he comes out of this 2 fight slump since he is one of my favorite fighters to watch.

MMA Weight Training

What is the best way to lift weights for mixed martial arts?   That can be a difficult question to answer.  We feel like your lifting should change from fight to fight.  Plus many fighters are injured or could be fighting in a championship fight that contains more rounds so its good to mix it up.  Here is great MMA workout that you can do when you are not training for a fight.  Don’t forget about post workout nutrition.  Try to always drink a shake with protein and carbs after each workout.

Bobby Lashley vs. Wes Sims is official

Jan 27, 2010

Strikeforce finally announced an opponent for the former WWE and current TNA wrestler and MMA figher Bobby Lashley and it will be the 6′8″ Wes Sims January 30th on Showtime.  Sims is a 3 time UFC veteran with an unorthodox fighting style with a bit of controversy surrounding him in previous fights.

Bobby Lashley

Bobby Lashley Fight Is On

Strikeforce has struggled to secure a worthy opponent for Lashley up until now. On January 15th the Florida State Boxing Commission wouldn’t approve Strikeforce’s first choice to fight Lashley which was Yohan Banks on the grounds the fight would not be competitive.  The next day a fight between Lashley and MMA journeyman Jimmy Ambriz was approved by the FSAC but Strikeforce cancelled the fight on January 19th for unknown reasons.

This should be a decent test for Lashley since Sims is a big heavyweight with a long reach.  Lashley hasn’t fought since June 27th 2009 which ended in a win by submission due to strikes over Bob Sapp.  Hopefully this will be a good fight and not a freak show but we will have to wait until this weekend to find out!

Jake Shields Vs. Dan Henderson for Strikeforce Middleweight Belt on CBS in April?

Jan 18, 2010

Dan Henderson destroying Michael Bisping

Dan Henderson destroying Michael Bisping

Former UFC Middleweight and Light Heavyweight contender Dan Henderson has recently stated his first Strikeforce fight will be against 185-pound champion Jake Shields at an April fight card on CBS.  The Strikeforce Card in April appears to be loaded with MMA stars since it is rumored to have this Middleweight title show down and mark the Strikeforce return of Fedor Emelianenko who will fight Fabricio Werdum.  Gegard Mousasi will fight on this card against an opponent to be determined later and hopefully Mousasi will be defending his Strikeforce Light Heavyweight championship for the first time.

The former Pride champion Dan Henderson made the upcoming fight announcement via ESPN.com’s MMA Live show which he was on to accept the  “Knockout of the Year” honors for his devastating KO of Michael Bisping at UFC 100 last July.

It will be great to see Henderson fight for the title and I feel that he is better than Shield’s in all aspects of MMA besides submissions since Shield’s is a Cesar Gracie Blackbelt in Jiu Jitsu.  Dan Henderson may be a little overmatched in the submission department but HENDO represented the United States 2 times at the Olympics in Greco Roman wrestling so there is no doubt in my mind that he will be much more powerful than Shield’s.  It will be hard for Shield’s to take Henderson down since HENDO has great takedown defense, so my theory is Henderson will keep the fight standing and bang it out with Shield’s in a fight that will showcase both fighters striking abilities.  Dan Henderson has had many highlight reel knockouts during his MMA career over great fighters like Michael Bisping and Wanderlei Silva who are both known for their outstanding striking abilities.  This is why HENDO will have no problem dispatching Jake Shields using his powerful striking abilities to win the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship come April on CBS, at least in this MMA nerds opinion!

BJ Penn’s next victim will be Frankie Edgar

Jan 14, 2010

BJ Penn

BJ Penn vs. Frankie Edgar

The UFC was waiting to see how Gray Maynard did at UFC Fight Night 20 against Nate Diaz and Maynard edged out an arguable split decion against Diaz in Fairfax Virginia.  The next opponent for BJ Penn was going to be either Gray Maynard or Frankie Edgar and the unimpressive performance by Maynard sealed the deal for Frankie Edgar to step up and take on the Hawaiian fighting machine that is BJ Penn.  UFC president Dana White said he felt that Edgar was better prepared than undefeated 155-pounder Gray Maynard for a crack at the dominant champion.  White confirmed that the tentative plan was to match Penn against Edgar at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi on Apr. 10th , but he added that it was not confirmed.  It doesn’t matter what fighter steps in the octagon with BJ Penn as long as Penn is serious about training, fighting, and his legacy he will be very hard for anyone to beat at 155lbs.

UFC signs college wrestling champ Phil Davis

Dec 21, 2009

Phil Davis

New MMA Fighter Phil Davis

The UFC signed a highly touted wrestling prospect out of Penn State University by the name of Phill Davis.  The Pennsylvania native is training at the Alliance Training Center in San Diego and the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Calif.  Davis is 4-0 in MMA since turning pro in 2008 so he has a little experience in much smaller shows.  Only time will tell if Davis can handle big fights a stiff competition in the UFC or will he be another star wrestler turned bust MMA fighter like Jake Rosholt.  Hopefully the UFC brass will give him a few fights to help build his confidence in the octagon.

Rampage Jackson back to the UFC?

Dec 14, 2009

Rampage Jackson

Quinton Rampage Jackson may be returning to the UFC to shut up Rashad Evans and Dana White according to a post on Jackson’s official website.  The post from Rampage stated  “I wanted to let my fans know that I’m going to come back to the UFC [to] finish my contract – not because the haters are talking [expletive] about me being scared of Rashad … or anybody else. I’m coming back for my fans and to shut Rashad’s mouth up and shut Dana’s mouth up. Then after that I’m going back to doing movies, and I might do a boxing match once a year just to stay in shape.”

This post follows a post in September that said he was “Done Fighting” .  Rampage pulled out of his scheduled fight in his hometown of Memphis with Rashad Evans in order to make the new A-Team movie.   When the movie over it looks like he will be back to training to finish his UFC contract.

Rampage has been one of my favorite fighters since I first saw him fight in Pride in 2001 in a loss to Kazushi Sakuraba.  After his two stints as a coach on TUF I have lost a little respect for Rampage since he doesn’t seem to care about his fighters to much.  It could be editing which is why I am keeping an open mind but he has not looked good on the show.

Brock Lesnar out of MMA action indefinitely

Dec 4, 2009

Brock Lesnar uses Xpand

MMA's Brock Lesnar

Rumors have been swirling about Brock Lesnar and his recent health struggles and everything from cancer to aids has been said.  UFC President Dana White has cleared up some of these issue saying “Lesnar is currently suffering from a bacterial infection in his intestinal track in addition to the mononucleosis”.  Lesnar’s mystery illness has already twice forced the delay of a planned fight with top contender Shane Carwin. At UFC 105 post-event press conference, White said he wasn’t sure when Lesnar could potentially return to action.

The UFC’s heavyweight title picture is also currently unclear, but White said he doesn’t want to make a decision until he has more knowledge of Lesnar’s ultimate return date.

“If it’s a long wait, we’re gong to have to do something,” White said. “The last thing I ever want to do is strip a guy who won a title. That’s the last thing I want to do. I don’t know if we’ll have to do an interim or what we’ll do to fix it.”

Renzo Gracie vs. Matt Hughes Rumored for UFC 109 in February

Nov 17, 2009

Renzo Gracie

Two MMA legends are rumored for UFC 109 which is scheduled for February 6, 2010 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.  A welterweight fight between former 2x champion Matt Hughes (43-7 MMA, 16-5 UFC) and PRIDE veteran/probably UFC newcomer Renzo Gracie (13-6-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is expected to be part of next year’s UFC 109 card.  This could be an interesting matchup since Hughes has already defeated Royce Gracie.  Renzo puts up a good fight against anyone so this match is very intriguing.
