Frankie Edgar retained his Lightweight Championship against BJ Penn in a 5 round decision.  Edgar looked faster than Penn throughout the whole fight and Penn appeared to get tired early on.  All three judges scored the fight 50-45 in favor of Edgar so there is no doubt that Edgar is the Lightweight Champion now.

Randy Couture welcomed James Toney to the MMA big time ring at UFC 118.  Couture put Toney on his back within the first 20 seconds of the fight an Toney looked like a fish out of water.  Toney had no answer for Couture’s ground n pound and Toney set himself up to get choked out with an arm-triangle choke.

Gray Maynard and Kenny Florian fought in a number 1 contender match for the next shot at Frankie Edgar.  Maynard repeatedly took Florian down and punished him on the ground.  Florian had no answer for Maynard on the ground and he could not stop Maynard’s take downs.  Gray Maynard won via unanimous decision to take the #1 contender spot.

Nate Diaz fought in is 2nd Welterwight fight against tough veteran Marcus Davis.  Diaz outboxed Davis and did alot of damage to Marcus Davis’s face with multiple deadly strikes.  Diaz closed the fight out in the 3rd round with a guillotine choke on Davis to win his 2nd straight fight since his move to Welterweight.

Rafeal Cavalcante defeated King Mo Lawal by TKO due to strikes in the 3rd round to become the new Strikeforce Light Heavyweight champion.  This was viewed as an upset due to Cavalcante face opponents that are not well known.

Ronaldo Souza  used solid counterstriking to defeat Tim Kennedy via unanimous decision to become the new Strikeforce Middleweight Champion.  Souza is known as one of the most feared grapplers in MMA but he showed vastly improved striking to win the belt.

K.J. Noons desamated  his opponent by totally out striking Jorge Gurgel and knocking him down at the end of the first round.  Then at the beginining of the second round Noons hit Gurgel with a 3 punch combo that dropped him and Noons finished Gurgel with strikes on the ground at 0.19 of round 2.

Chad Griggs defeated the heavily hyped Bobby Lashley after Griggs began landing solid strikes on Lashley at the end of the 2nd round.  Lashley did not answer the bell for the 3rd round.  This loss will put Lashley way down the ladder in the Strikeforce Heavyweight division and people will stop comparing Lashley to UFC Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar

Strikeforce is on this weekend

Strikeforce is on this weekend

The Strikeforce main event this weekend is Champ Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal vs. Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante for light heavyweight title.  This will be King Mo’s first title defense and it will probably go a lot like his title fight against Gegard Mousasi in which King Mo used his wrestling and take downs to win the fight.

Another interesting fight is Tim Kennedy vs. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza for the vacant middleweight title.  Jacare has excellent Jui Jitsu and Kennedy poses a threat if the fight remains standing.  Kennedy and Souza are fighting for the belt that Jake Shields vacated when he signed with the UFC.  The fight of the night could very well be Jorge Gurgel vs. K.J. Noons due to the fighting styles they both possess.  Gurgel likes to stand and bang even though we has a black belt in Ju Jitsu and K.J. Noons is a skilled boxer that will stand and trade with anyone.  This fight card has some interesting match ups and 2 title fights, it also has Bobby Lashley facing Chad Griggs if you are interested in Lashley’s MMA career.

Anderson Silva wins after being dominated for 4 rounds

Anderson Silva wins after being dominated for 4 rounds

Anderson Silva wins after being dominated for 4 rounds

UFC 117 which had a main event of Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen proved that Anderson Silva is human.  Sonnen rocked Silva in the first round, and then knocked him down and used his wrestling to take Silva down for 4 rounds and deliver effective ground n’ pound.  In the fifth round the only way Silva could win is by finally putting a stop on Sonnen and he did just that in the knick of time.  Anderson Silva pulled off a triangle and transitioned it into an armbar and forced Chael Sonnen to tapout in the 5th round after dominating the other 4.  Sonnen did what he said he was going to do and kept coming forward and didn’t give the champion a break or time to rest.  Silva remained patient and did not get frustrated and pulled off a slick submission for the win to retain his belt.  Silva will be out till 2011 with a rib injury and hopefully Sonnen will be back in the cage against a top contender soon  and hopefully this time for a W!

Tito Ortiz returns at UFC 121

Tito Ortiz returns at UFC 121

Tito Otiz will make a return to the octagon at UFC 121 following his exit from TUF 11 and his fight with Chuck Liddell.  Ortiz pulled out of the fight to have his second surgery on his neck.  The Huntington Beach Bad Boy will make his return at UFC 121 against his student on TUF 3 Matt Hamill.  This will be an interesting fight since Hamill was on Tito Ortiz’s team on The Ultimate Figher and both are wrestlers.  Only time will tell if Tito Ortiz’s neck can hold up in the octagon against world class fighters.

Jake Shields signs with the UFC

Former throwaway Strikeforce Middleweight champion Jake Shields has signed with the UFC.  Shields defeated Dan Henderson in a bout Stikeforce expected him to lose and then Strikeforce did not show any signs that they wanted to resign shields.  UFC president Dana White was very happy to scoop up Shields from Strikeforce and throw him into the Welterweight mix in the UFC.  Shields is expected to make his UFC debut against Martin Kampmann on October 23, 2010 at UFC 121.  The winner of this fight is expected to face the winner of Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck when they fight after filming TUF 12.

Will the James Toney and Randy Couture Fight be the UFC’s first freak show fight?

Jul 16, 2010

Will James Toney and Randy Couture be the UFC's first freakshow fight

Will James Toney and Randy Couture be the UFC's first freakshow fight

The UFC’s recent signing of boxer James Toney could be seen by fans as the UFC’s first freak show fighter.  James Toney has been boxing for more than 22years and started off in the 156lb division and now fights at heavyweight.  James “Lights Out” Toney has accumulated a professional boxing  record of 72-6 which is a very respectable record.  Toney has fought many big name fighters including John Ruiz, Hasim Rahman, Roy Jones Jr., and Evander Holyfield.  After 22 years of professional boxing and big fights its hard to understand what would make Toney want to come into the UFC and fight a Hall of Famer like Randy Couture.  James Toney attended UFC 108 and started saying he wanted to fight in the UFC to anyone that would listen, if he say a person with a microphone and camera Toney started to talk.  After UFc 108 Toney showed up at other UFC events basically stalking UFC president Dana White about fighting in the UFC.   On March 3rd 2010 Dana White confirmed that the UFC and James Toney had agreed on and signed a multifight deal.

James Toney said he didn’t want any easy fights and wanted to fight the best so the UFC obliged Toney by giving him Randy Couture in his first ever MMA fight.  Randy Couture is a very smart fighter and great when it comes to making and sticking to a game plan in a fight.  Unless Couture gets flat footed and stands in front of Toney to long its not hard to guess what is going to happen.  Randy Couture will use his world class wrestling skills to take Toney down and use ground and pound to finish the fight.  James Toney has been quite on who he is training MMA with but word is he has been working on every aspect of MMA.  Its hard to believe Toney can keep this competitive and he can not use 3 months of MMA training against Couture’s 10 years and keep this fight close.  I have never seen a knockout while a fighter is lying on his back with another fighter in his guard, I am not saying it is not possible I have just never witness it.  This is will be a very interesting boxer vs. MMA fighter match up that Couture should win easily.

Chuck Liddell may not retire?

Jun 25, 2010

Chuck Liddell may not retire?

Chuck Liddell may not retire?

It appears that since his latest KO loss to Rich Franklin Chuck Liddell has had a change of heart about retiring.  Liddell has been quoted as saying:

“I’m still working on evaluating,” Liddell said. “I thought I did great before I was caught. I have to look at it some more and think about it. I think I looked good and I definitely was in great shape. I could have kept that pace up for another four rounds, without a doubt.”

So it even though his trainer and longtime friend John Hackleman and UFC president and friend Dana White both want him to retire Liddell may continue to fight.  The question is where will he fight because the Rich Franklin fight was the last fight in his UFC contract and I can nit see Dana White signing him to another contract if he wants him to retire.  Only time will tell.

Chuck Liddell KO’d in the last MMA fight of his career

Chuck Liddell KO'd in the last MMA fight of his career

Chuck Liddell lost his fight at UFC 115 in Vancouver Canada to Rich Franklin by KO at the end of the first round.  The Iceman was looking good throughout the first round breaking Franklin’s arm with a kick early in the first round.  Liddell would have won the first round on scorecards if he would has lasted another 5 seconds but  Liddell threw a hard right hand missing its mark and Franklin missed with a counter left but then threw a straight right that connected to Liddell’s mouth knocking him out cold and splitting his lip.  This fight will mark the end of Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell’s career in MMA since he has lost 5 of his last 6 fights and 4 of those were KO’s to Rich Franklin, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Rashad Evans, and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.

Chuck Liddell has been the biggest name in MMA since the first season of The Ultimate Fighter and his first KO victory over Randy Couture after the show.  He helped the UFC grow to the international phenomenon it is today.  It is definitely time for the Iceman to retire it is just a shame to see him go out with so many KO loses but how many fighters actually leave in their prime on a winning streak.  Chuck Liddell was in the best shape he has been in in years and he put up a great fight against Rich Franklin.  Chuck went out like the warrior he is, swinging for the knockout with every punch he threw but he ended up getting caught again.  It is time for this UFC warrior to hang up his 4oz gloves for good and find another position within the UFC since according to Dana White, Chuck will always have a job in the UFC.

Fedor Emelianenko to fight Fabricio Werdum in June

May 4, 2010

Fedor Emelianenko

After months of renegotiating between M1 Global and Strikeforce Fedor Emelianenko has agreed to fight Fabricio Werdum at a Strikeforce/M1 Global co-promoted event in San Jose California on June 26th.  This will mark the first time Fedor has been back in the cage since his win over Brett Rogers on November 7th 2009.  Fabricio Werdum has been out of action since November 7th as well.  This should an exciting fight since Fedor has heavy hands and is not scarred to fight on the ground.  Werdum is a Brazilian Ju Jitsu Black Belt that is not afraid to let his hands go.  This fight will be the main event on the Strikeforce/M1 Global card on Showtime with no other fights announced so far at this time.  It will be exciting to see if Fedor can remain undefeated against a ground wizard like Werdum.
