Tips for correct spotting during weightlifting

Spotting someone while weightlifting plays a crucial role in weight training, there are some basic tips that everyone should know to not only ensure safety but, proper lifting technique too.  A good spotter can help your training in these basic ways:

  • Assist with the lifting exercise when the lifter has reached their limit
  • Provides minimum assistance to ensure exercise is done in proper form
  • Spotters can also point out improper from and help to correct the form

When spotting you must always be ready at all times through the exercise while the person is completing their set, you must stay focused on the lifter not on your surroundings.  As a spotter you must also focus on your form as much as the person lifting.  It is not uncommon for a spotter to injure themselves while spotting someone.  Here are some tips for spotting form:

  • Keep lower back arched not rounded
  • Keep feet at shoulder width apart
  • Try not to lean to far over the person lifting
  • Depending on exercise using two hands is better than one

Spotters are an important factor in heavy weight training they can push the lifter through strength and weight plateaus.  They can assist in helping the lifter achieve greater weight, while ensuring correct form throughout the lift.  Spotters also can be a “motivator” helping to encourage the lifter mentally.

Vitamin D – Helps Improve Melanoma Survival?

Feb 25, 2010

Current research is suggesting that higher levels of vitamin D are linked to less severe, less deadly melanoma lesions in people who have skin cancer. These findings provide researchers with more support for the idea that vitamin D is critical to skin health. Unfortunately, many Americans do not get enough vitamin D in their diet to help improve healthy skin. Dr. Julia A Newton-Bishop, a dermatology professor in England stated, “although avoiding sunburn is very important in order to prevent melanoma, it is also important to avoid becoming deficient in vitamin D. This is especially important for melanoma patients in whom low vitamin D levels appear to be harmful to their health.”

Vitamin D to improve Melanoma Survival

Vitamin D - Helping to Improve Melanoma Survival

Researchers looked at the medical records of more than 870 people with melanoma and tried to link their vitamin D levels to the severity of their lesions and their likelihood of surviving without a relapse. Those individuals with higher levels of vitamin D in their bodies had less severe lesions (lesions were thinner) and a lower rate of relapse researchers noted. According to Dr. Newton-Bishop, “the research suggests that low levels of vitamin D allow melanoma tumors to grow easier therefore becoming more of a threat to the patients.” Researchers mentioned how it is not clear how food, sun exposure and supplements contributed to the higher levels of vitamin D in some people, although they did take more multivitamins and cod liver oil compared to others with low levels of vitamin D.

Melanoma is the cause of most skin cancer deaths, even though it accounts for less than 5% of skin cancer cases every year. The best way to prevent melanoma is by avoiding excessive sun exposure and protecting your skin in as many ways as you can. To boost the level of vitamin D in your diet, people with melanoma should take daily supplements, multivitamins and consume foods that contain sufficient levels of vitamin D, such as omega-3 rich fatty fish and some fortified cereals. Vitamin D is naturally present in very little amounts of foods, therefore researchers recommend supplements containing as many as 2,000 (IU) International Units of vitamin D for individuals with skin cancer, and more if you are obese. Vitamin D appears to be more than a cancer fighter. Low levels of vitamin D have also been linked to a variety of health problems, including heart disease, infections and poor overall health. Also noted was adults with low levels may suffer from lower bone mineral density.

Define your abs through diet

Get Defined Abs

Get Defined Abs

Are you one of those people that no matter what you do your abs only seem to look their best when you’re lying down? No matter how hard you train abs they seem to be just hidden under the skin.  Subcutaneous fat is the fatty or adipose tissue lying directly under the skin layers. Subcutaneous translates to “under the skin.” It contains not only fatty tissues but also blood vessels, which supply the skin with oxygen, and nerves. Subcutaneous fat is a shock absorber, helping to cushion our skin against trauma, and also stores energy, which the body uses during periods of high activity.

Unfortunately this little layer of fat is the hardest to lose for the majority of us.  Dieting is always hard for just about anyone, but if you want those abs to show for summer here is a diet plan that will help you bring those abs out for everyone to see.

Going with a low carb diet will force your body to burn more fat and help you shed that subcutaneous fat that is keeping your abs hidden.

Pre-Breakfast, 1st thing in the morning: 2 scoops of whey protein.

Breakfast 30 to 60 minutes later: Scramble 3 whole eggs and 3 egg whites, ¼ medium chopped onion, 1 cup of broccoli and 1 slice low fat cheese. Mix all together and enjoy.

Late morning snack: 2 scoops of whey protein and 1oz of Walnuts.

Lunch: 5oz chunk light tuna in water, 2 cups mixed green salad, 2 tbsp of olive oil/vinegar dressing.

Midday snack: 2 scoops of whey protein, 1 tbsp of peanut butter.

Pre-Workout: 45 minutes before workout 2 scoops of whey protein.

15 minutes before workout take a pre-workout drink to ensure maximum training capabilities.

Post Workout: Within 30 minutes of finishing your workout grab a post workout drink, this will help to increase muscle growth as well as recovery.

Dinner: 8oz of at least 90% lean beef or better and 2 cups of green vegetables. I know this does not look like much but, remember were not trying to bulk up we are trying to get those abs to show.

Late Night Snack, right before bed: 1 cup low fat cottage cheese, 2 tbsp of roasted flax seeds.

Everyone’s genetics are different some of you may see results after just a week while others may have to endure longer to get your wanted results.

I’ve Never Felt Stronger…

Feb 19, 2010

Here’s something that has always bothered me when I see an ad for a new supplement; “I’ve never felt stronger!”

Get Stronger

Feeling Strong Today?

When I see this caption in an ad, it always makes me think to myself, “Big deal. Why should I be impressed?”

Just because this person says he feels stronger, doesn’t mean he is stronger. This is the type of ad deception that I am always on the lookout for.

Ways to feel better other than eating

Feb 18, 2010

When people are often upset, sad, depressed, or even bored they often turn to the pantry for a fix. To cure your mood or boredom look elsewhere besides your refrigerator by following some of the following tips:

Ways to feel better other than eating

Call A Friend When Something Is Wrong Rather Than Eating Away The Pain

- Try calling your best friend if you’re upset instead on munching on something salty or sweet. Having someone to listen to you sometimes is all you’ll need. By talking, you are able to release emotion instead of pushing it back down with food.

- Animals are a great source of positive energy; they can make you smile 24/7 even if they are bad sometimes! Turn to your dog, cat, bird, rodent, or any type of animal to help lift your spirits. If you do not have an animal then take a trip to the park and watch the birds, squirrels and other wildlife.

- Browse the internet and look for items you may want now or in the near future. Download music, play games or catch up on the latest news, sports and gossip around the world.

- Rewind time and go through your movie collection. Find a movie you love from your past, settle in and enjoy it for the night.

Following these steps and other similar ones will help you fight the urge to eat to feel better. Next time the day just isn’t going your way, don’t think about the gallon of ice cream you have in your freezer, take a deep breath and try something besides eating.

Carnitine for testosterone

Feb 17, 2010

Beverly International Carnitine

Beverly International Carnitine

Most of us that hit the gym 3 to 5 times a week and are trying to build muscle already understand the importance of protein and carbohydrates to stimulate protein synthesis.  What most of us do not know is that eating right after you workout can actually decrease testosterone levels.  Now wait, this actually can be a good thing for those of us trying to build muscle.

Scientific research has shown that the decrease of testosterone levels is because it is being used to bind to its receptor.  This would also be known as the androgen receptor, this actually does stimulate even more muscle growth. In fact the lower that you can get your testosterone levels the greater the levels will be in the androgen receptors.

Now here is where you can supplement to get even more of a boost.  Studies have shown that carnitine may help to increase the overall effects, because Carnitine naturally regulates testosterone levels.  By taking just 2 to 4 grams of Carnitine per day, you may actually be able to raise your overall testosterone levels creating more muscle growth before, during and after working out.

The next thing you need to make sure your doing is eating 40 to 50 grams of whey protein with 80 to 100 grams of a slow digesting carbohydrate. This will ensure that your testosterone levels drop helping the levels in your androgen receptors pick it up creating that muscle growth your working so hard to gain, this is the most anabolic time to create optimal muscle growth.

Non-Surgical Technique for Diagnosing Breast Cancer Nearly as Effective as Surgical Biopsy New Study Finds

Feb 12, 2010

Non-Surgical Technique for Diagnosing Breast Cancer Nearly as Effective as Surgical Biopsy New Study Finds

New Technique Being Praised For Diagnosing Breast Cancer

Different methods of minimally invasive biopsy for breast cancer are nearly as accurate as surgical biopsy but have much less risk of harm to patients, according to a new report release late last week. The report states comparative information between traditional surgical biopsies with various types of needle biopsies involving removal of tissue through a large hollow needle inserted through the skin. The same report will also provide information so that doctors and patients can work together to make the best possible diagnostic choice for each individual patient.

Based on reviews in several scientific journals, the risk and impact of core needle biopsy on patients could distinguish between malignant and benign lesions approximately as accurately as open surgical biopsy, which is commonly considered the “gold standard” method of evaluating suspicious lesions. Core needle biopsies have a much lower risk of severe complications than open surgical procedures, researchers found. Reports also found that women who are initially diagnosed with breast cancer by surgical biopsy are more likely to undergo multiple surgical procedures during treatment than women who are initially diagnosed with breast cancer by core needle biopsy.

Open surgical biopsies, which involve removing a sample of tissue from the suspicious area through a surgical incision, are highly accurate. The procedure may be performed under general anesthesia, sedation plus local anesthesia, or local anesthesia only. But, while generally considered safe, open surgical biopsies are surgical procedures that, like all surgeries, carry a small amount of risk. Given that only a fraction of women who undergo breast biopsy procedures are diagnosed with cancer, use of traditional biopsy leads to large numbers of women who do not have cancer undergoing an invasive surgical biopsy.
