Avoid Diet Woes By Not Succumbing To Your Favorite Treats

Avoid Diet Woes By Not Succumbing To Your Favorite Treats

Who is really in control when it comes to those tempting little snacks we crave so much – you or the sweet treat? Accept how much power the mouth watering treat has over you and you will be more likely to stick to your diet. Researched has shown that people often overstimate their ability to fight temptation, so they do not take reasonable steps to avoid it, then end up succumbing, most often in the worst of ways – binging! The best advice we can realistically give is to be aware of your weakness and take steps to avoid succumbing to your favorite treats – like not buying them at all!

Bobby Lashley vs. Wes Sims is official

Jan 27, 2010

Strikeforce finally announced an opponent for the former WWE and current TNA wrestler and MMA figher Bobby Lashley and it will be the 6′8″ Wes Sims January 30th on Showtime.  Sims is a 3 time UFC veteran with an unorthodox fighting style with a bit of controversy surrounding him in previous fights.

Bobby Lashley

Bobby Lashley Fight Is On

Strikeforce has struggled to secure a worthy opponent for Lashley up until now. On January 15th the Florida State Boxing Commission wouldn’t approve Strikeforce’s first choice to fight Lashley which was Yohan Banks on the grounds the fight would not be competitive.  The next day a fight between Lashley and MMA journeyman Jimmy Ambriz was approved by the FSAC but Strikeforce cancelled the fight on January 19th for unknown reasons.

This should be a decent test for Lashley since Sims is a big heavyweight with a long reach.  Lashley hasn’t fought since June 27th 2009 which ended in a win by submission due to strikes over Bob Sapp.  Hopefully this will be a good fight and not a freak show but we will have to wait until this weekend to find out!

Proper Bench Press Equals Massive Pecs!

Get Massive Pecs With Proper Bench Press Techniques

We all have ideas in our heads of the proper form when weightlifting. Each and every one of us has our own way of lifting weights and exercising.  We have all seen those guys in the gym who we think have bad or improper form, you know the guy doing standing straight bar curls and working his lower back or the guy on the bench press and the only part of his body touching the bench is his shoulders. Sometimes I honestly wonder if those guys can walk the next day??

We all want to lift as much weight as possible and some will sacrifice form over proper lifting techniques..  The higher weights will come maybe a little slower if you lift properly but, when you are finally up to those heavy weights you will do them easier and with fewer injuries.

Let’s go over some proper bench press forms, remember this is for muscle building and not power lifting:

1.    Grip Width – As a general rule the wider you grip the bar the more you will work the pectoral muscles. The narrower the grip the more you work your shoulders and triceps. You also do not want to go to wide while benching you can put your shoulders into a weaker position. Even those with long arms should not let your little finger go no farther than the outer ring on the bar. For most of us shoulder width or a little past is going to be perfect placement.

2.    Thumbless Gripping - I have no idea how this got started but, the thumbless grip while bench pressing is not only bad form but very dangerous. There is no evidence to show that you can lift more by using this grip. Your pec’s, front delts and tri’s are the muscles that push the weight the position of your thumb has nothing to do with it. Grip the bar with your thumb around the bar not only for safety but, good form too.

3.    Contact Points – Using three point’s of contact while benching will not only get you in good form but, also help to increase your weights..  Your feet should be in contact firmly with the floor at all times. Your butt and shoulders should maintain solid contact with the bench. Arch your lower back, but do not lift your butt off the bench into the air.

4.    Shoulder Placement – Start by tucking your shoulder blades underneath your body and focusing on pulling them inward so they touch, then downward as if toward your hips. This should force your chest outward and upward. This is exactly what you want and what will help you to train your pec’s, not use your front delts so much. This should also give you the best natural arch to your lower back. An added benefit to this part of the technique is that it will also stabilize your rotator cuffs more.

5.     Proper Movement - Lower the bar at an even pace touch the bar to your chest lightly while maintaining control and don’t bounce the bar off your chest. Remember, this is not about how much weight you can lift, it’s about how full and thick you can get those pec’s(the heavy weight will come later) Keep the tension on your pec’s at all times and touch the bar to your chest about 2/3 of the way up your sternum (breastbone). Finally, return it in virtually a straight line to the lockout position and go again. Remember 2 seconds up and 2 seconds down is a good pace.

6.    Proper Breathing – Proper breathing is also an important part of form. Breathing helps you to maintain your form and not start moving or shifting your body around on the bench. You should inhale and the bar is lowered to your chest and then exhale as the bar as pushed back up. Holding your breath is not only bad but, dangerous. There is also no scientific evidence that screaming or grunting uncontrollably helps you to lift more. Nice even breaths in and out will get the proper amounts of oxygen into your body.

With some time and patience, you’ll find that with proper form you will maximize your pectoral muscle development. By isolating your pec’s and by not using your front delts so much, this form forces your chest to overcompensate for the lack of deltoid involvement. By doing this your pec’s have no choice except to grow.

By doing this form right you should expect to feel some great pumps and have some very sore pec’s the following day.

5 Winter Weather Health Tips

Jan 21, 2010

Stay healthy all year round with fitness products

Stay healthy all year round with fitness products

When the weather outside drops in temperature, take some time to restore your energy. Don’t resist the urge to nestle into your snug, warm home, wrapped up in blankets comfortable and cozy. Here are 5 secrets that will help preserve your energy, bringing you health and tranquility not only in the winter months, but all year round.

The winter season is when nature sleeps, and everything experiences the slowing of natural processes, including our bodies. Humans stopped hibernating like their ancestral cousins long ago, but our bodies still experience the natural inclination to slow down during winter. The winter is a time to come back to quietness and rebuild your energy reserves for warm weather months when the hunt is back on!

 1. Bedtime comes earlier, wake with the sunrise

Try to go to sleep earlier and wait (if you can of course) to let the sun bathe the house before rising from bed. Get your zzz’s in — at least 8 hours of sleep every night. Try taking a 20- to 30-minute easy walk one hour before you go to bed to improve the quality of your sleep.

2. Be contented

Avoid experiencing excessive emotions in the winter because they drain your energy reserves. De-stress with relaxation tips, breathing methods or even yoga!

3. Be wise with your energy reserves

The three months of winter are when all living things should return home and be conserved. Engage in activities that are in harmony with the energies of winter. Avoid perspiring excessively; be active in a moderate way. Walking is a simple activity to keep your energy up.

4. Eat for the season

To keep your health and energy up in the cold months of winter, avoid cold and raw foods, reducing salt to protect your kidneys, and increasing bitter flavors (like kale, for instance.) So steer clear of raw vegetables, cold salads, and icy cold foods and beverages. Instead your diet should follow nature’s menu for the seasons. Hearty soups are good for you during the winter months. Drink only warm or hot water.

5. Avoid coldness and linger around warmth

Dress warmly, paying special attention to your middle section. The abdomen is considered the storehouse of the body’s energy reserves. Keeping your abdomen warm and protected from weather extremes has immense immunity benefits. A good way to replenish your energy bank is to regularly place a hot water bottle on your stomach.

If you choose to go against these winter rules, it is said that weakness and coldness in the extremities will leave your energy levels weakened in the spring.

The Taco Bell Diet? What a Joke!

Jan 20, 2010

Just Say No To The Taco Bell Diet!

Just Say No To The Taco Bell Diet!

In almost every American household, at least one person began the new year with the typical weight loss resolution. Millions began diets and workout routines to follow through with their vow to shed the extra pounds, tens of thousands join fitness centers, and an undetermined number began their diets at their local Taco Bell. Yes, you read that correctly, Taco Bell.

Taco Bell has begun a controversial ad flurry campaign introducing the new Taco Bell Drive-Thru Diet. According to Taco Bell, their new “Fresco Menu” can help people reduce daily calorie consumption and intake. The fine print though says this menu is not a weight loss program, making the fact that they call it the Drive-Thru Diet highly misleading, but totally consistent for a chain whose single item “Fiesta Taco Salad” contains more than 770 calories and 41 grams of fat alone!

Taco Bell has followed the well publicized lead of Subway, following the success of Jared Fogel, the young man who claimed to have lost 240 plus pounds eating twice a day at Subway. Fogel then became their national spokesperson in 2000 and has religiously appeared in over 70 commercials pushing Subway as a healthy fast-food alternative. Following the success backing Jared, Subway has used eating healthy as its marketing platform and even started a foundation to fight childhood obesity. Although, more than a few menu items at Subway are far from “healthy”

Taco Bell has jumped in the driver’s seat of the bandwagon and is now singing the same tune, hiring Christine Dougherty as a national spokeswoman. Dougherty claims to have lost more than 50 pounds over 2 years because of eating at Taco Bell. As proof, new TV ad’s show a picture of a heavier Christine followed by a slim and sexy new fit version, fresh off of her Taco Bell diet.

Taco Bell has really done its homework, and has found a new way to take advantage of people’s lack of health and fitness knowledge with their new campaign. American’s alone spend over $50 billion a year on diet related products that they see or hear about on TV or radio. On any given day for instance, 45% of women and 25% of men are on a diet in the United States. Now Taco Bell is focusing their marketing attention on winning over that grouping of dieters to test out and follow the new diet and menu options they have to offer.

Researchers state that diets followed by both Jared and Christine are calorie restrictive and are the most difficult to do and nearly impossible to maintain. Experts explain that any diet that severly restricts calroic intake will lead to weight loss, no matter the food choice. But the problem is that these diets are too narrow in focus and not sustainable in the long term.

This is why the Taco Bell diet is such a joke! Scientists predict that by 2015 alone, more than 75% of Americans will be overweight blamed in part because misleading food advertising such as Taco Bells Drive-Thru Diet. Consumers who do not educate themselves on health and fitness information find it difficult to read into these false claims and get accurate information about such diet foes like empty calories, trans fat and reasonable serving sizes. I understand that America is all about freedom and choice, and unfortunatley because of this, I believe that people will buy into this Drive-Thru Diet and Taco Bell will have their ad campaign pay off in the long run. Healthy lifestyles must be the choice of the individual, but when it comes to those individuals uneducated in the health and fitness field constantly being filtered with false advertising claims I believe they will choose what they see on TV, which isn’t always the healthiest choice.

Jake Shields Vs. Dan Henderson for Strikeforce Middleweight Belt on CBS in April?

Jan 18, 2010

Dan Henderson destroying Michael Bisping

Dan Henderson destroying Michael Bisping

Former UFC Middleweight and Light Heavyweight contender Dan Henderson has recently stated his first Strikeforce fight will be against 185-pound champion Jake Shields at an April fight card on CBS.  The Strikeforce Card in April appears to be loaded with MMA stars since it is rumored to have this Middleweight title show down and mark the Strikeforce return of Fedor Emelianenko who will fight Fabricio Werdum.  Gegard Mousasi will fight on this card against an opponent to be determined later and hopefully Mousasi will be defending his Strikeforce Light Heavyweight championship for the first time.

The former Pride champion Dan Henderson made the upcoming fight announcement via ESPN.com’s MMA Live show which he was on to accept the  “Knockout of the Year” honors for his devastating KO of Michael Bisping at UFC 100 last July.

It will be great to see Henderson fight for the title and I feel that he is better than Shield’s in all aspects of MMA besides submissions since Shield’s is a Cesar Gracie Blackbelt in Jiu Jitsu.  Dan Henderson may be a little overmatched in the submission department but HENDO represented the United States 2 times at the Olympics in Greco Roman wrestling so there is no doubt in my mind that he will be much more powerful than Shield’s.  It will be hard for Shield’s to take Henderson down since HENDO has great takedown defense, so my theory is Henderson will keep the fight standing and bang it out with Shield’s in a fight that will showcase both fighters striking abilities.  Dan Henderson has had many highlight reel knockouts during his MMA career over great fighters like Michael Bisping and Wanderlei Silva who are both known for their outstanding striking abilities.  This is why HENDO will have no problem dispatching Jake Shields using his powerful striking abilities to win the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship come April on CBS, at least in this MMA nerds opinion!

I have always used Hempz by Supre tanning lotions for all of my tanning needs, but never thought to use it for regular lotion use. I got online and found it on i-Supplements cheaper than anywhere else I had looked, one site had it for $15 more than i-Supplements sells it for! BJ Penn’s next victim will be Frankie Edgar

Jan 14, 2010

BJ Penn

BJ Penn vs. Frankie Edgar

The UFC was waiting to see how Gray Maynard did at UFC Fight Night 20 against Nate Diaz and Maynard edged out an arguable split decion against Diaz in Fairfax Virginia.  The next opponent for BJ Penn was going to be either Gray Maynard or Frankie Edgar and the unimpressive performance by Maynard sealed the deal for Frankie Edgar to step up and take on the Hawaiian fighting machine that is BJ Penn.  UFC president Dana White said he felt that Edgar was better prepared than undefeated 155-pounder Gray Maynard for a crack at the dominant champion.  White confirmed that the tentative plan was to match Penn against Edgar at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi on Apr. 10th , but he added that it was not confirmed.  It doesn’t matter what fighter steps in the octagon with BJ Penn as long as Penn is serious about training, fighting, and his legacy he will be very hard for anyone to beat at 155lbs.
