Light Smoking Even Affects Young Adults Arteries

Oct 29, 2009

Light Smoking Even Affects Young Adults Arteries

Studies have recently noted that smoking just one cigarette stiffens the arteries of young adults by almost 25%. Researchers explained how the stiffer a persons arteries, the greater the risk for heart disease or stroke. Studies measured arterial stiffness in smokers and non-smokers at rest and after exercise, from the ages of 18-30. When establishing a baseline measurement, smokers who consumed 5-6 cigarettes a day were asked to refrain from having a single cigarette for at least 12 hours prior to their first exercise assessment. Before the second assessment test, smokers were allowed to have just one cigarette. Prior to the final test, they were then asked to chew a piece of nicotine gum.

Following the exercise test, arterial stiffness in non-smokers decreased 3.6%. But the smoker’s arterial stiffness increased by more than 2% following exercise. In smokers the stiffness increased by 12.6% after chewing the nicotine gum and 24.5% prior to having one cigarette. There was no difference between the smokers and non-smokers arterial stiffness while at rest.

The study results are said to be significant because they suggest that smoking a just a few cigarettes a day impacts the health of individual’s arteries. This development was revealed clearly when these young people in the study were placed under physical dis-stress, in this case being exercise.

    Women and Mixed Martial Arts

    Oct 26, 2009

mma girlsGrowing up as an active child is an understatement.  I participated in every sport that was made available to girls and played on any club or church team I could get involved with.  Staying in shape and working out became a passion of mine at a young age.  When I wasn’t playing an organized sport, I was out rollerblading, playing with the boys in the street hockey team, or throwing football with the neighbor kids.  Playing varsity golf in high school and soccer on a rec. league kept me busy in high school.  This is also when I started hitting the weights and conditioning to get and stay in shape.

I started training seriously with a trainer about 2 years ago, lifting weights and doing cardio daily.  After constantly doing the same routine, I started to get burnt out.  I wanted something more challenging.  Earlier this year I took a kickboxing class at my gym offered by Josh Rafferty, a professional MMA fighter who was on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter.  It was the best workout I had in a long time.  Not only is it great cardio but it also offers great technique in self-defense.  Spending 30 minutes on a treadmill is not my idea of fun and I dread even thinking about it.  Mixed martial arts is a different type of cardio.  It’s a nonstop training, therefore speeding up your heart rate and keeping things fun at the same time.

This introduction kickboxing class has taken my interest further into Muay Thai boxing and Jiu Jitsu.  The passion has led me to start training as an MMA fighter.  I train at a new MMA gym in Cincinnati called Drive.  With Josh Rafferty and Rob Radford as coaches, I receive nothing less than the best training.  I look forward to training and becoming a better fighter.  I believe women’s MMA fighting is on the rise and is growing more and more popular.  I hope to compete in my first MMA fight early next year.

If you are a female athlete or are looking for a different kind of workout, I suggest trying out mixed martial arts.  It is not only challenging, but fun as well.  Getting punched in the face or kicked in the body may not be your forte, but the training to be a fighter is very rewarding and may be the change you are looking for.

    American Whey and Pro-Nos Combo

    Oct 26, 2009

I have been using American Whey Protein for quite a while now because of its’ excellent quality and great taste. Today I got a sample of Pro-Nos from MRI, and decided to mix them together. The result?american whey

A great tasting, quality protein shake! This combination is honestly one of the best tasting shakes I have ever had. Some protein shakes are very watery when you mix them, but not this combo. It was almost like drinking a milk shake and was extremely filling.

So enough about the taste. A shake isn’t worth drinking if the quality is low. But once again this combo delivers. Both protein powders are primarily whey isolate, so you know they are of high quality. With one serving of each protein you get the following nutritional profile:

     - 400 calories
     - 62 grams of protein
     - 24 grams of carbs (only 7 grams of sugar)pro-nos
     - 9 grams of fat

That’s an impressive nutritional content. Low fat, moderate carbs and high protein – that’s an ideal combo for adding pounds of lean muscle mass!

    UFC 104 Picks

    Oct 23, 2009

    Lyoto Machida

Champ Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (for light-heavyweight title)

Shogun looked great in his last fight against Chuck Liddell and it was his first great performance in the octagon.  Shogun is a Muay Thai fighter so his strikes are good and he has excellent Jui Jitsu.  Lyoto Machida is a Shotokan Karate fighter that is undefeated and he has 2 devastating knockouts in his last two fights against Thiago Silva and Rashad Evans.  It’s hard to pick against the undefeated champ especially when he barely gets touched in fights.

Keith’s Pick:  Lyoto Machida by KO in the 2nd

This fight isn’t being promoted as a blockbuster fight like some of the other main events in the past but it should be. Machida is a master martial artist unlike no one else in the UFC as he blends his Karate fighting skills along with takedowns and a very strong jiu-jitsu game.  Shogun has fought and beat some of the best fighters in the world.  If anybody has a chance at beating Machida, it’s Shogun.  Machida is a master at controlling the distance when striking.  If shogun can control the distance and not get caught up in Machida’s movement he has a chance.

Josh’s Pick:  MACHIDA TKO RD 2

    Ben Rothwell vs. Cain Velasquez

Ben Rothwell is a Miletich Fighting Systems fighter with a lot of experience including 9 fights in the IFL and 1 fight in Affliction. Rothwell likes to stand and bang and this being his UFC debut he wants to upset Cain Velasquez.  Cain Velasquez is a good all around fighter especially on the ground.  Velasquez trains out of American Kickboxing Academy so he will be prepared.

Keith’s Pick:  Cain Valasquez by TKO round 3

Cain is 4-0 in the UFC and could be a heavyweight champion someday.  Ben is a former IFL heavyweight champion that is new to the UFC but not to MMA.  The wrestling goes to Cain and the striking I would give the edge to Ben.  So in some ways this is a striker vs. Grappler.  Look for Cain to try and ground and pound Ben and for Ben to keep this fight on the feet.

    Josh’s Pick: CAIN DEC

    Josh Neer vs. Gleison Tibau

Josh Neer is a good fighter standing and can submit anyone; he is tough as nails and has a huge heart.  Gleison Tibau is a tough wrestler and Jui Jitsu fighter that is a big 155lber.  Tibau trains at American Top Team that is a great camp so he will be ready for anything.

Keith’s Pick:  Gleison Tibau by Decision

Tibau is a world class Jiu-jitsu fighter with a strong game.  Neer is a jack-of-all-trades; he is good at all aspects of fighting and will never back down.  In order for Tibau to defeat Neer, he needs to keep Neer on his back.  Even though Neer is good on the ground, I believe he needs to keep this on the feet.

Josh’s Pick: NEER TKO RD 3

    Joe Stevenson Vs. Spencer Fisher

This fight could be a good one but I think it will go like every other fight Spencer Fisher has against a good wrestler.  Joe Stevenson will take Spencer down and grind out a decision.  Spencer Fisher has excellent stand up but it will not stay standing long.

Keith’s Pick:  Joe Stevenson by decision.

Both of these guys are top contenders in the 155-pound division.  Joe is looking to get back in the title hunt with a big win over Spencer.  Just like every other fight on this card, it looks like another classic match up of striker vs. grappler.  Spencer has killer striking and good Jiu-jitsu.  We all know that Joe is a stud on the ground.  Can Spencer keep it up on the feet?  If he can he will win.

    Josh’s Pick: Stevenson DEC

    Anthony Johnson vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida

Anthony Rumble Johnson is a huge Welterweight with devastating ststrikes.  Yoshida is a good fighter with decent submission skills.  I feel this fight will  end quickly with Rumble Johnson getting the win.

Keith’s Pick:  Anthony Johnson KO round 1

If you are from Japan and fight in the UFC chances are that you are going to fight the toughest guys every fight.  The UFC is pushing Johnson hard to be one of their top stars.  Yoshida has great Judo and decent striking but on paper this fight looks like it will be a one way beating.  Look for Johnson to finish this fight early.

Josh’s Pick: Johnson KO rd one

    Researched Sleep Better Foods

    Oct 21, 2009

Sleep Better FoodsForget it when your mom told you to sleep better at night to warm a cup of milk. When the pressure is on to try and catch some Zzz’s chow down on these foods prior to bedtime to get some serious shut-eye. The following foods are selected because they have been shown to induce feel good relaxing chemicals throughout your body allowing you to calm your nerves and settle down for a good night’s rest.

    1. Nonfat Popcorn – Throw a bag into the microwave a good 30-45 minutes prior to bedtime. The carbs will help induce your body into creating serotonin, the neurochemical that gives your body a relaxed feeling.

    2. Oatmeal with slices of Banana –Sleep is inspired by the hormone melatonin, but stress, eagerness and excitement can disrupt the release of melatonin reducing your chances of getting good nights sleep. To prevent this make a small bowl of oatmeal with slices of banana to top it off which is rich in melatonin.

    3. Yogurt and Nuts – Yogurt is a great source of Lysine, an amino acid that helps relieve the feeling of anxiousness. Nuts contain Arginine, yet another amino acid that calms nerves. Both contain alertness inducing protein, therefore if you snack on ½ – 1 cup of yogurt with 1 or 2 tbsp. of nuts prior to bed, it will help reduce the residual stress, anxiousness and anxiety many of us face that prevents us from sleeping.

    4. Sesame Seeds – These seeds are one of the best sources of natural tryptophan, the sleep inducing amino acid responsible for post-Thanksgiving comas.

    5. Pretzels – Grab a handful! Pretzels are low-calorie, low-fat source of carbs, which will help you fall asleep faster.

    6. Wine – You read it correctly. A single glass of wine, known to many as a “night cap” has coined this nickname for a reason. Wine does really help “take the edge off” if you know what we mean. Researchers have discovered that wine as well as any other single glass of an alcoholic drink caused people’s blood vessels to relax. Relaxed blood vessels means lower blood pressure, slower heart rate and greater ability to relax and mellow out.

    7. Unsweetened Cherry Juice – Cherry juice has serotonin inducing carbs, which help us begin to relax and sleep better. Drink a glass of juice about an hour before bed to avoid feeling a jolt of energy due to the small amount of sugar.

    8. Red Bell Peppers – Vitamin C has been shown to stop the secretion of cortisol, the hormone released into the body when we are stressed, making it harder for us to relax. Red bell peppers are a great source of vitamin C than any other fruit or vegetable.

Get to snacking and enjoy a full night of enjoyable sleep!

    High Reps or Heavy Weight?

    Oct 20, 2009

    Hi Reps or Heavy WeightQuestion:
I hear a lot of confusing information about which is better between using high reps or low reps. Most people say that high reps with lower weight is better for “cutting”, whereas low reps with heavy weight is better for building muscle. Can you shed a little light on this please?
    Answer:
Actually, either of these strategies is fine for building muscle, cutting fat, or both, provided you are challenging yourself with the weights being used. Muscles grow when they are forced to compensate for added work (lifting). Think about when you first started lifting weights. The growth you experienced was rapid because your muscles were not used to the new amount of work they now had to do. Basically they were shocked into growing quickly. After a while, though, they become accustomed to weight lifting and your progress begins to slow, or sometimes it stops altogether.

The human body is remarkably adaptable, so you need to change things up and challenge it in order to keep your progress moving forward. If you’ve been training heavy for quite a while, switch it up and start doing lighter weight, but higher reps. The same goes if you always train lighter with higher reps.

Your diet is going to play the biggest factor in how you look. Sets, reps and weight are secondary to building muscle or losing fat. If you do higher reps with lighter weight, “cutting up” is going to be much harder if all you eat is cheeseburgers.

    In health,

    SLINGSHOT by Axis Labs

    Oct 19, 2009

slingshotAre you ready for the best workout of your life?  If you answered yes then Slingshot by Axis Labs is for you.  Last week I had a chance to try this new pre workout formula and I must say it exceeded all of my expectations.  Most pre workout drinks are loaded with caffeine and other stimulants where as Slingshot is designed to increase maximum athletic output.  Other products will get you going but fail in the end because of the sugar and caffeine crash. Slingshot will have you muscles begging for more.  Slingshot will fight:

    · Muscle fatigue

    · Glucose depletion
    · Dehydration, cramping and catabolism
I have been training all my life and have experimented with countless energy drinks and pre workout formulas.  Slingshot by Axis Labs is the most effective pre workout supplement I have ever taken.  This will definitely be a permanent addition to my nutritional arsenal.
