Kimbo the next TUF champ?

Sep 30, 2009

20081004054231_kimboKimbo the next TUF champ?

This season of The Ultimate Fighter has been advertised as the shows biggest season ever.  While setting a ratings record with the first show, episode 3 looks to be the biggest episode ever in the history of the show.  Last week it was announced that Internet fighting sensation Kimbo Slice would be fighting former IFL champ Roy Nelson on episode 3.  Since that announcement, Spike TV has been running commercial after commercial to build this fight up.

Who will win?  Well if I was in Vegas I would put all my money on Nelson.  Roy Nelson has fought some big name guys and has had great success.  With a record of 13-4 and two of his four losses are to Jeff Monson and Andrei Arlovski.  Despite sporting a soft physique, Roy is a very well conditioned fighter and also has a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.  On the other hand Kimbo probably has better hands but the edge in wrestling and jiu-jitsu goes to Roy.  This is Kimbo’s big shot so you can bet that he is going to bring it.  No matter what happens in this fight, I believe that Kimbo will get a contract in the UFC.  The bottom line is that people like to watch Kimbo and if he weren’t on this show the ratings would suffer. For this fight I’m going to go with Roy by decision.

How to Develop More Back Width

Sep 28, 2009

If you’re looking to add some more width to your lats, here is a training split that can add inches to your back width. You will be training your back on two days during the week, with one heavy day reserved for back alone, and another lighter day where you do additional back width exercises.Back Width

A lot of your back width is due to genetics, but that doesn’t mean you can’t maximize what you have to work with.

Day 1: Back
 Lat pulldowns: 4 sets of 8 – 10 reps
 Barbell Rows: 4 sets of 6 – 8 reps
T-Bar Rows or Cable Pulley Rows: 4 sets of 8 – 10 reps
Pullovers with EZ Curl Bar: 4 sets of 6 – 8 reps
Reverse Grip Cable Pulldowns: 3 sets of 8 – 10 reps

Day 2: Legs
Day 3: Rest
Day 4: Chest and Triceps
Day 5: Shoulders, Biceps, and Light Back (width exercises)
 For Back:
Pullups: 3 sets to failure with bodyweight
  Wide-grip pulldowns: 3 sets of 12 – 15 reps
  Wide-grip Barbell Rows: 3 sets of 10 – 12 reps

Note: Do not overdue it with the back exercises on the light day. This should be  done just to get the blood flowing and to get a good pump in your lats.

Day 6: Rest
Day 7: Rest

Follow this routine for a couple of months and soon you’ll be able to cause an eclipse on your own!

Breastfeeding or Bottlefeeding?

Sep 25, 2009

breastfeedingOh, where do I start!  The benefits of breastfeeding are practically countless.  There are benefits to baby and mom, as well as, to society.  Babies who are breastfed grow just as they are supposed to since the breastmilk has the perfect combination of fat, sugar, protein, and water.  It also gives the newborn much needed antibodies that help protect it from bacteria and viruses.  These same antibodies also protect it from developing other infectious diseases and greatly cuts down on infant hospitalizations.  Breastfed babies also score slightly higher on IQ tests when compared to their formula fed counterparts.  They also have less incidence of SIDS. Studies have proven that when an infant is breastfed, that as an adult, it is less likely to develop diabetes, lymphoma, leukemia, be overweight or obese, or have high cholesterol or asthma.   Breastmilk is tolerated and digested better than formula, its always the right temperature, and it is the most natural and complete food available.  Formula is a good second, but it will never be able to match the perfection of the real thing!

For the mother, producing breastmilk requires extra calories, therefore using the calories for milk production instead of fat storage which helps get some of the pregnancy weight gain off.  It also helps the uterus get back to its original size faster, while cutting down on excess bleeding.  It decreases the risk of ovarian and breast cancers, and it may decrease the incidence of hip fractures and osteoporosis after menopause.  It is convenient, sanitary, and FREE!  Immediate gratification for the infant anywhere you are, no measuring formula, cleaning dirty bottles and nipples, or making sure everything is sanitary; and best of all it’s free.  No running out of formula in the middle of the night, or worrying about the temperature being just right.  It also creates a bond between mom and baby that cannot be explained.  I personally breastfed all three of my kids for the first year, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

From a societal standpoint, breastfeeding lowers healthcare costs and workplace absenteeism (since there is less sick visits and hospitalization for the infant), which increases workplace productivity.  It also creates less trash and plastic waste from formula cans, bottles, nipples, and other supplies needed to make formula, so it is much better for the environment.  It promotes family bonding and shows a commitment of dedication from mom to baby saying, “I’m doing everything I can to give you the best start possible!”

LETS GET IT ON

Sep 23, 2009

big_john_mccarthyLETS GET IT ON!

Lets get it on is one of the most popular phrases in all of sports.  This term was made famous by long time MMA ref “Big “John McCarthy during the early days of the UFC.  On September 10th Big John submitted his application to the Nevada State athletic commission to become a licensed referee in that state.  Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, mailed a letter to Big John saying that they were not adding any new referees at this time.  McCarthy has refereed over 600 MMA events since UFC 2 back in March of 1994.  I don’t know what is going on behind the scenes, but with so many high profile fights now I think we need more guys like John.  Just recently we have had some questionable stoppages in the UFC.  Some of these guys come from boxing and don’t really understand how our sport works. Not only is Big John a ref, he is also a mixed martial arts instructor.

Now Mr. Kizer is on record saying that John McCarthy has not been turned down for a license.  For the sake of the fighters and the sport I hope that they use Big John in the future.  So many people can benefit from Big Johns return.  John can mentor young refs plus many fans have confidence in Big John knowing that he is a fair and balanced ref.  John McCarthy is a great human being and ref.  Nevada is crazy for not having a guy like Big John.

Check out Limuz Nei and its Immune Boosting Properties to fight off H1N1

Sep 22, 2009

Swine Flu continues to cause widespread illness, hospitalization and death worldwide to date. Experts are not advising people to start using supplements like Immune Tree’s Limuz Nei to help boost their immune systems and prepare their bodies for what is predicted to be the deadliest flu season ever!

Limuz Nei by Immune TreeFor those of you who’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, let us fill you in on some major announcements. Earlier this summer the World Health Organization, better known as WHO declared that the influenza A (H1N1) virus be confirmed as a global pandemic, leaving many worldwide on high alert and in a panic. Many highly revered medical experts have been stressing the use of immune boosting supplements like Limuz Nei to individuals to help prepare their bodies for the upcoming turbulent flu season right around the corner. At the time of their announcement, more than 70 countries had officially reported infections, cases and outbreaks of Swine Flu. With these reported cases more than doubling prior to the start of the regular flu season have many of these experts up in arms over immune boosting products and their beneficial attributes.

Within the United States alone, there have been, and still are a significant number of H1N1 related illnesses being reported. Among all the countries that’ve reported swine flu outbreaks, the U.S. continues to be the only country reporting the largest number of swine flu cases. Don’t be another number on a doctor’s tally of sick patients. Take necessary precautions prior to the upcoming flu season with the help of Limuz Nei and other immune boosting supplements at www.i-supplements.com to help combat and fight off what could be the worst flu season mankind has ever seen.

Firm your butt fast

Sep 18, 2009

Standing Ball Slide –

This easy to do at home move will help work your butt, legs, core and shoulders. Slip on into your skinny jeans with this move that combines a plie squat, which is an effective toner for your large lower body muscles with an added but necessary leg lift. The second leg lift part is key! It will work the smaller muscles of your glutes, which can be difficult to target for some people. You’ll notice more of a total butt firming that you cannot get from plain old boring squats.

Standing Ball Slide Position

 - Start by straddling your stability ball, toes turned out. Shift your weight to your right leg as you raise you left foot (so that your left leg is extended over the top of the ball) and lift your arms out to your side at shoulder height with your palms facing the floor. (If you lose your balance place your hands at your hips to secure your balance and posture.)

  - Place your left foot on the floor again and squat until your butt nearly touches the stability ball.

 - Shift your weight to your left foot now, raising the right leg across the top of the ball, then repeat squat to complete your first rep. Continue from side to side doing 3-4 sets of 8-10 reps. (If you want to make it a little harder then move a bit faster or do it while holding a small dumbbell in each hand.)

Why Am I still skinny?

Sep 17, 2009

Why am I still skinny?

hulk-hoganMany young men get into lifting because they want to be big and strong.  When I was younger all of my heroes were larger than life and had big muscles.  Hulk Hogan, Arnold, Stallone, and Dalton just to name a few.  Just like most beginners, I attacked the weights hoping to look like an action hero but along the way I ran into some problems.  Here are some basic tips that will have you on the way to looking like your favorite mass monster.
1) You’re doing too much in the gym

When you want something bad enough you will do whatever it takes even if it means spending hours in the gym.  This is a great idea for just about anything in life except for building muscle.  Less is more when it comes to making solid muscle gains.  Try to focus on the big lifts that hit major muscle groups like:
 Squats
 Deadlifts
 Bench press
 Rows

2) Not eating enough of the right foods

If you want to be big you need to eat big.  Consuming quality calories and a diet that consists of protein, starchy carbs, and vegetables is the key to adding muscle without fat.  Eating these nutrients frequently is the key here, try and eat every 2-3 hours if you want to pack on mass.

3) Supplements

You will never reach your goals without supplements.  We all live busy lives and sometimes don’t have enough time to get all of our meals in.  A meal replacement shake is a great way to sneak a meal in when time is tight and they also work great for a post workout shake.  My favorite meal replacements are MRX1 from Schwartz labs and Myoplex from EAS.  Creatine is also good for hard gainers.
