Yesterday, new diet information hit the newswire and is being reported everywhere.  I heard it all evening on the local and then national news programs.  I even awoke to it this morning on the early news.  All this is based on a study published in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine.  The Study was led by The Harvard School of Public Health and Pennington Biomedical Research Center of Louisiana.  Why they did the study in the first place is unclear to this lifetime student of health and nutrition.  We have known that “a calorie is a calorie” since I can remember.  Now, based on this new study my fitness coaching clients and the average american are going to continue the horrible way of thinking that how we eat “isn’t thaaat bad”.  It is that bad.  We are the most unhealthy people to walk the planet earth in all of history.  We are  eating empty calories of refined garbage all day, everyday and respected leaders in health research along with trusted news outlets are going to tell us all that matters is F@*#king calories! – really?

“The kind of diet doesn’t matter,” scientists say.  “All that really counts is cutting calories and sticking with it.”  says one news program.  “It really doesn’t matter what particular amounts of fat, carbohydrates or proteins you eat.” chimes in another news source. 

Are you kidding me?   You just told America that Pop Tarts and Pizza is a perfectly good diet.   Don’t get me wrong.  The fact reported is technically true but it needs so many clarifiers and caveats before you lay it on people as news.

I say what you eat  -  DOES MATTER – it’s literally a matter of life and death.

I agree total calories is critical to dieting and weight loss but what about vitamins – minerals – micronutrients – fiber – antioxidents – enzymes – and all that other “good for you” stuff , huh?  The stuff that influence cell health – cell production – brain synapsys – immune functions – reproductive systems – proper metabolism – hormone axis – absorption and assimilation – and of course FAT storage and utilization.  There are countless factors to consider.

You wanna do a study or report  something?  Try this:

• Why are we the slowest moving country in the modern world on food reform for our people?
• Why is the average person malnourished in the USA when “we have so much”
• Study the diets of middle class and lower class children. 
• Research the effect of junk food marketing on kids.
• Figure out how to remove the harmful sugar from the food supply.
• Why doesn’t America understand basic food and health pricinples? (Oh, nevermind.  There is no need to study this one.  The reason for this is evident.  It’s because of irresponsible studies and news reporting like this latest debacle.)

Congratulations Harvard - ABC – CBS – NBC and everyone else for studying and reporting the obvious and missing the point all together.

Hey, maybe Obama and the Government can create a program and set some cash aside to help You ….

Skin is the largest organ in the human body, but all skin is not created equal. For instance, the skin around the eyes is very sensitive and needs extra care throughout our entire lives. Luckily, there are special steps we can take to protect these delicate areas.

Most importantly, get at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night. Getting a healthy supply of rest and relaxation will help eliminate puffiness around the eyes and sleeping with your head slightly elevated will reduce unsightly dark under-eye circles. And speaking of dark circles, did you know you could get rid of them by dipping cotton pads in chilled milk and placing the pads on closed eyelids for ten minutes? This helps relax the skin muscles around the eye. Those who work at a computer will find this particularly beneficial as it helps reduce the eyestrain associated with prolonged periods of monitor watching. Raw potato slices on closed lids for about twenty minutes will help strengthen those muscles, also reducing strain.

Always use an eye cream, such as Dermalex-MD around the area of the eye to help retain moisture. Use your ring finger to apply cream by dotting it around the eye area. Do not rub it in! Rubbing the area can cause elasticity breakdown in the skin and eye infections.

In addition to these “do’s” of eye skin care, there are also some definite “do not’s.” For instance, take your mother’s advice and do not sit too close to the television. At least 15 feet away is a good rule to follow. If you wear contact lenses, follow the instructions on care and maintenance. Placing your contact lenses in your mouth to clean them and then in your eyes is not only inviting infection, it’s also just gross!

Be gentle with the skin around the eyes. Keep it properly hydrated and avoid strain and contamination. Following these few simple guidelines will have you defying the age gods and keep you looking your best.

Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson

This fight is interesting since both fighters have great wrestling, excellent submissions, and they both like to ground and pound.  Diego “The Nightmare” Sanchez always brings it, he is always in shape and has a good game plan.  This will be Diego’s first fight in the lightweight division but I don’t think the cut will be a big deal  Joe Stevenson is always in great shape and he is coming off a tough loss to Kenny Florian.

This fight is going to be awsome!  Both fighters have similar styles with fast takedowns and world class submission skills.  Joe is coming off a hard loss to Kenny Florian and is looking to make a statement in this fight.  This is Diego’s first fight in the lightweight division and I believe that he will become a champion at this weight.

Josh Koscheck vs. Paulo Thiago

Josh Koscheck is turning into a force in the welterweight division.  He has developed a great striking game at American Kickboxing Academy to go with his outstanding wrestling skills.  KOS took Georges St. Pierre and Thiago Alves the distance in decision losses which is not an easy task.  Not much is known about Paulo Thiago except he had fought in his native Brazil for Jungle Fight.  Paulo is a JuJitsu fighter that wants to get this fight to the ground.  This is Paulo first fight in the big show and I think he will be surprised if he takes KOS down and he ends up with KOS on top of him delivering some brutal ground and pound.

Kos is on a roll with a great performance in his last fight.  I don’t know much about Thiago but I know he is from Brazil, has good Jiu-Jitsu and most of his wins are from submission.  Josh’s striking is looking great plus with his strong wrestling I think its going to be a long night for Thiago.

Nate Marquardt vs. Wilson Gouveia

Nate Marquardt has only lost twice in the octogon, once to Anderson “The Spider” Silva for the middleweight belt and once to Thales Leites by split decision in which Nate had 2 points deducted, he really won this fight.  Nate trains with Greg Jackson so he will have a good gameplan.  He is a former King of Pancrase and he is still young at 29.  Wilson Gouveia is a tough fighter that trains at American Top Team and his last win against the Canadian Jason Macdonald was a great fight. 

Keith’s Pick – Nate Marquardt by (T)KO round 1

Nate is looking for another title shot while Gouveia is looking for his first.  Both guys are well rounded with awsome BJJ and improved striking skills.  The difference is going to be conditioning for this fight.

Demian Maia vs. Chael Sonnen

Demian Maia is a Brazillian submission machine, world class JuJitsu, next level compared to every other fighter.  He finishes most of his fights with a submission and he won Submission of the Night honors 3 times in 4 UFC fights.  Chael has good wrestling and striking skills but he is prone to get submitted by good submission fighters like Jeremy Horn and Babalu and I see this one going the same way but it should be a great fight.

Keith’s Pick – Demian Maia by RNC in round 2

Ok this fight is simple to break down.  Maia has the best jiu-jitsu in the history of the UFC!  Chael is a great athlete with sick takedowns and good striking.  If Maia can get Chael down he can win.  If it stays on the feet Chael should win.  Chael should fight him the same way he fought Filho.  This is a hard one to pick.

Dan Hardy vs. Rory Markham

Dan Hardy has a lot of experience in the UK and won his UFC debut against UFC and Pride veteran Akihiro Gono at UFC 89.  Hardy trains half the time in the UK and the other half at Legends MMA and 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsue with Jiu-Jitsu wiz Eddie Bravo.  Rory Markham is a crafty veteran of the IFL and won his UFC debut at UFC Silva vs Irvin by brutal headkick and won Knockout of the Night Honors.  Rory trains at Miletich Fighting Systems in Iowa so he trains with some top level guys.  This could be Fight of the Night candidate!!!

Both guys are young and have dynamite in their fist’s.  Hardy has been in martial arts his whole life and has a variety of skills.  Rory has been boxing since his early youth and has been training in Iowa with MFS for most of his MMA career.  Look for both guys to some in with some fire.
