Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson
Winner: Dan Henderson by Split Decision
The three-round light-heavyweight fight went the distance, but it was Henderson who left The 02 in Dublin, Ireland, with a victory.
After taking the first two rounds on two judges’ scorecards, Henderson earned the split-decision win with scores of 29-28, 27-30, 29-28. I have no idea how a judge scored the bout 30-27 in favor of Franklin, Dan Henderson clearly won the first two rounds and lost the third.
The two former champions were fairly evenly matched standing up, but Henderson used strong takedowns and ground control to come out ahead after two rounds. Franklin ate a couple big overhand rights, but only an accidental head butt showed any visible damage during the fight.
With Henderson worn down after the first two rounds, Franklin took charge in the third. Continuing with solid left kicks to the midsection, Franklin avoided Henderson’s takedowns and kept the fight standing. Only an inadvertent eye poke in the final minute slowed Franklin down.
After a two-minute timeout to recover, Franklin had just 40 seconds to force the stoppage or risk losing the decision. Henderson, though, made no mistakes and left the fight with the decision victory.
I have read many people complaining about the accidental eye poke from Henderson to Franklin. This is Mixed Martial Arts people not Ballroom Dancing, accidental head butts, eye pokes, groin kicks, etc… will happen. When these unfortunate things happen a fighter must overcome the adversity. You can’t wait until an opponent tires in the third round to turn it up and try to win the fight, I honestly do not believe Franklin could have finished Henderson the 40 seconds even if the eye poke did not happen!!

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua vs. Mark Coleman
Winner: Mauricio “Shogun” Rua by TKO with 24 seconds left in round 3
This was a sloppy and slow-paced fight that saw both fighters gas by the second round. Shogun pulled out the victory at the end of the third round after dropping Coleman with a series of punches. If Mark Coleman had any gas left in the tank he would have been able to get the victory. Even tired he was still able to take Shogun down. After the fight the two buried the bad feelings toward one another. All in all this was a boring fight after the first round.
It was announced that Shogun will face former Light-Heavyweight Champ Chuck Liddell at UFC 97 at the Bell Centre in Montreal Canada on April 18th. Rua better get some cardio or Chuck could add another highlight reel knockout to his resume

Denis Kang vs. Alan Belcher
Winner: Alan Belcher by Guillotine Choke at 4:36 of round 2
Denis Kang’s long-awaited UFC debut started off well by dominating Alan Belcher for the majority of 2 rounds but as any MMA fan knows you have to fight the whole fight and be able to finish your opponent.
Facing a tough and arguably underrated fighter in Alan Belcher, Kang had the advantage standing and when the fight went to the ground. Easy takedowns and stellar conditioning allowed Kang to put his opponent in a lot danger throughout the first two rounds of the scheduled three round affair.
While Kang easily transitioned into dominating ground positions, Belcher continually escaped and avoided his opponent’s submission attempts. And late in the second round, Belcher finally got his opportunity to turn the tide of what had been a dominant performance for Kang.
Getting lazy and telegraphing his takedown attempts, Kang was easily caught by a waiting Belcher as he secured a guillotine choke and then forced Kang to tap out once “The Talent” pulled guard to sink the guillotine in deep.

Rousimar Palhares vs. Jeremy Horn
Winner: Rousimar Palhares by Unanimous Decision
Jeremy Horn’s best days in the cage may be behind him, but there’s no questioning his toughness.
Rousimar Palhares was the younger, quicker and stronger fighter and it showed, Horn survived 15 minutes of hell, brutal takedowns and suplexes, continual near-stoppages and constant ground and pound. Palhares battered Horn constantly, but he couldn’t finish him.
In the end, the judges gave all three rounds to Palhares for the unanimous-decision victory (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Marcus Davis vs. Chris Lytle
Winner: Marcus Davis wins by split decision.
In the night’s first televised bout, a much-anticipated welterweight fight between veterans Marcus Davis and Chris Lytle had a fight of the year candidate buzz around it. The three-round slugfest delivered everything I thought it would and more
Davis’ showed great counter-striking, which included brutal left kicks to the midsection and left-right punching combinations, which continually wore down Lytle. But as both fighters promised, the fight never went to the ground; Davis forced Lytle to mat on a few occasions, but “The Irish Hand Grenade” never followed and simply waited for his opponent to stand back up.
After two fairly close rounds, Davis nabbed the decision victory with a dominant third, and in the end, he settled for a split-decision victory (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).
